Ceremony & Celebration

One aspect of her work, which distinguishes Ramsaran from other artists working in bronze is her elaborately etched surfaces. Many of her sculptures are covered in an overall, craggy pattern not immediately apparent to the eye without close scrutiny. Often, an abstract ornamentation functions together with the formal structure of the work to echo the three-dimensional configuration of the composition……..There are three figural works in which groups of celebrants are depicted in the midst of observing initiation ceremonies (Initiation of the Arrowhead Women, Dance of the Arrowhead Women and A Ceremony in Silence). Here, Ramsaran employs three-dimensional striations and features which serve to characterize the age and status of her figures. Extending beyond this symbolic function, these surface patterns also confirm the artist’s prowess as a sculptor working in bronze.
